Through the years, Mel has seen his best friend hit his lowest point over and over again. Each time, he’s there to pick him up and marvels at the deep faith Alain has in life, in people, in God, even in his horrible drug-addicted mother. Alain is strong and creative, and since he was a young boy, Mel promised him that he would be by his side forever. And he never breaks his promises.

Alain shouldn’t be kissing Mel. He knows this. He knows it’ll make him think they can be together. Out on the Prairies of 1930, where his religious upbringing is strong, men are supposed to marry women, raise large families, and be happy with the life drilled into them. Despite Mel’s thoughts, he can have all that, especially when Alain’s sister needs a father for her bastard child. Mel deserves that life, and the only thing in the way is Alain. Mel isn’t broken or damaged or this afraid to breathe. Yet as Alain grips his best friend’s hand and challenges him to a game of a Truth or Dare, Alain can’t let go. He just can’t.

We can’t keep challenging each other this way.
